US 701 South near Clarkton

North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Kenneth L. Clark has issued an update of road conditions in Bladen County as of Thursday afternoon. The update is as follows:

Primary Routes:

Most US and NC routes are clear (with possible minor icy spots) EXCEPT for the following:  NC 41 east, NC 53 east, and NC 210 east.  While we continue to work to get these routes completely cleared of any remaining ‘slush’ by nightfall, there will remain enough residual moisture on the pavement that intermittent refreezing is a strong possibility for these locations.

Secondary Routes:

We did not get many secondary routes completely clear of snow/ice today.  With the possible exception of the Bladenboro area, most secondary roads have intermittent patches of snow/ice remaining that will refreeze again tonight.  The hidden danger and major concern here is that these secondary routes are characterized by long stretches of dry pavement followed by intermittent areas of residual snow / ice.  This is most prominent in areas that were shaded from sunlight for much of the day and on roads that are oriented east-west.

We will be reducing forces overnight as the road salt is ineffective at the forecast low temperatures.  For tonight, please contact the office number (862-3396) with any emergencies.  We will ramp back up again tomorrow to address remaining issues on secondary routes.

An update of road openings / closings is as follows:

CLOSINGS:

Coley Road

Coley Road remains closed in order to replace the bridge over Hammonds Creek.  A signed detour is in effect to use Airport Road to White Plains Church Road to Vause Road to Rosindale Road.

UPCOMING CLOSINGS:

Mote Road

Beginning Tuesday, January 9, we plan to resume pipe replacement work on Mote Road.  The location will be approximately 2.5 mile north of NC 41.

ELWELL FERRY:

The Elwell Ferry is NOT operating today due to iced over ramps / deck.  It may resume operation tomorrow if everything is thawed out and the engine cranks.
