The bridge over South River located on US 701 at the Bladen/Sampson County line is not in danger of a complete collapse said NC DOT District Engineer Drew Cox on Wednesday afternoon.

“There is an approach failure there,” said Cox. He explained that the approach to the bridge has been undermined by the flooding from the river.

Cox said the approach flap to the bridge is moving somewhat, but it is not part of the bridge structure itself. He said the bridge itself at this point is not in any danger of collapsing.

Cox did say that once the flood waters recede, inspectors will go and inspect the bridge thoroughly. He said the bridge will not re-open to traffic until the DOT makes the repair to bridge approach first.
