With winter weather comes winter chores, such as shoveling snow. Did you know that shoveling snow can actually be a dangerous undertaking?

Bladen County Emergency Management Director Bradley Kinlaw said his biggest concern is falls.

“One of the biggest concerns I have is if someone slips and falls and breaks a hip,” said Kinlaw.

Often, when folks go out to clean snow off their sidewalks, steps or driveways, they do not take their cell phone with them. Kinlaw encourages residents to please take your cell phone with you if decide to go outside and perform winter chores. In the event of a fall, having your cell phone with you can allow you to summon help quickly.

Another danger associated with winter weather chores is heart attacks, according to The Weather Channel. Cold air can restrict the blood flow and shoveling snow increases both blood pressure and heart rate which can potentially lead to a heart attack, according to Metro Health.

So use caution when you are outdoors, especially when clearing snow from sidewalks and driveways.
