NEWTON GROVE – Left-hander Matthew Barefoot pitched a four-hit shutout and the Midway Raiders took advantage of six West Bladen errors in beating the Knights 7-0 on Friday in a Four County 1A/2A Conference baseball game.

Barefoot, who has signed to play for Campbell University, struck out six and walked three in notching the win. He worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second inning, but wasn’t in trouble the rest of the game. Barefoot retired the last 10 batters.

Chandler Lennon pitched the first four innings for West Bladen. The junior right-hander allowed five hits and walked six, and was hurt by the Knights’ six errors. Three of the seven runs Lennon allowed were unearned. Mason Hester pitched two scoreless innings.

Jeremy Hunt, Trent West, Colby McLean and Troy Edge each had singles for West Bladen.

West Bladen is 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Knights are scheduled to play at Union on Tuesday and at Wallace-Rose Hill on Friday.

Midway, the defending state 2-A champion, is 11-2 and 6-1.

West Bladen loaded the bases with one out in the second inning on walks to McLean and Seth Britt followed by an infield single by Edge. Barefoot retired the next two batters on a fly out that was not deep enough for the runner at third to score and a strikeout.

Midway countered with four runs in the bottom of the second on singles by Trey Wood, Landon Dorman and Wesley Johnson along with three base on balls.

The Raiders added another run in the third when Wood reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored when Dorman reached on a two-out infield error.

Midway’s final two runs came in the fourth inning, using a hit, three errors, a pair of stolen bases and a hit batter to open a 7-0 lead.
