ELIZABETHTOWN – East Bladen’s Lady Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Hobbton 3-2 Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball action by set scores of 25-15, 23-25, 17-25, 25-18 and 15-9.

Junior Cybil Campbell reeled off a trio of service points to stake the Lady Eagles to a 5-3 lead early in the final set. A pair of service points from sophmore Cheylee Mathis padded the East lead to 10-6.

After Hobbton closed the gap to 10-9, junior Ruth Ward served out the set with four consecutive service points.

Junior Lorna Mendell knocked in 16 service points to lead the East Bladen servers. Ward and Mathis finished with 13 service points each. Campbell racked up 12 service points.

Junior Lila McDuffie tallied 3 service points before leaving with an injury in the first set. Junior Sarah Johnson added 3 service points, and sophmore Katie Evans scored 2 service points.

A trio of service points from McDuffie staked East to an early 7-4 lead in the first set. A 4-point service run by Mendell padded the Lady Eagle lead to 16-12. After Hobbton pulled to within 17-15, Ward served out the set with 8 straight service points.

A pair of Mendell service points and three more from Mathis put East Bladen ahead 8-5 in the second set. Johnson halted a 7-1 Hobbton run with a trio of service points that edged East in front 13-12.

Three more service points from Mendell kept East Bladen ahead at 21-19 before Hobbton served out the set. The Lady Wildcats rode a 6-point service run to a 14-7 lead in the third set and maintained that margin to go up 2-1 in sets.

Another 4-point service run by Mendell pushed the Lady Eagles in front 7-3 in the fourth set. Hobbton battled back to take a 15-12 lead, before Campbell fired in six straight service points that vaulted East Bladen ahead 19-15.

With the Lady Eagles up 20-19, Mathis served out the set with four straight service points.

Coach Sara Ward’s Lady Eagles will host Whiteville Thursday at 4:30 in their Three Rivers Conference opener.
