Whiteville defeated East Bladen 3-1 Monday night in non-conference volleyball action at East by game scores of 25-22, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-13.
Senior Miller Heustess led the Lady Eagles with 18 assists, 15 service points and 3 aces. Junior Lexie Mendell hammered in 7 kills, 4 aces and 7 service points.
Senior Claire Campbell racked up 7 service points, 3 aces, 3 kills, an assist and a dig for East Bladen. Junior Anna Grace Long fired in 3 aces, a kill and 7 service points.
Senior Lacey Suggs slammed in 6 kills and 3 service points and had one assist. Senior Abby Ward contributed 4 service points, 2 aces and a dig. Sophomore Hannah DeVane smacked in 4 kills and 3 service points.
DeVane swatted in a kill, and Mendell dug out a return winner, then cracked a pair of service winners to keep the Lady Eagles even at 6-6 in the first game.
Whiteville went ahead 12-7, but Ward capped a 4-point service run with an ace as East tied the game 12-12.
The Lady Wolfpack responded with a 7-0 run for a 19-12 lead. Heustess rallied East with 4 straight service points aided by tipped winners from DeVane and Mendell and a winning return from Ward that trimmed the margin to 20-18.
Campbell’s service winner kept the Lady Eagles to within 24-22, before Whiteville won the game on the next point.
Mendell swatted in a kill to claim the serve for Heustess who reeled off 5 straight service points as East Bladen grabbed a 6-1 lead in Game 2.
A trio of Mendell service points and blocks by Campbell and Long pushed the Lady Eagle lead to 12-5. Campbell fired in a service winner and an ace to stretch the lead to 14-5.
Whiteville whittled the lead to 15-11, but Campbell connected on a back-row winner, DeVane spiked in a kill and Heustess tallied 2 service points to keep the margin at 19-12.
Kills by DeVane and Long kept East ahead 21-16, before Whiteville took the game with a 9-1 closing run.
Suggs began Game 3 with 3 straight service points as DeVane scored on a block. A Suggs back-row attack helped Heustess with a 3-point service run that stretched the lead to 8-3.
Campbell belted in a kill, Long cracked a winning return and Mendell blistered in an ace for a 12-6 East lead. Campbell tipped in a winner, then delivered a run of 4 straight service points that grew the lead to 17-8.
Suggs smashed in a kill, and Long’s service winner boosted the Lady Eagle lead to 19-9. A 10-2 Whiteville flurry narrowed the margin to 21-19.
DeVane stopped the run with a winner, Mendell spiked in a winner and Campbell scored on a tip for a 24-19 East lead. Mendell’s kill won game point at 25-20.
Whiteville grabbed leads of 10-0, 19-3 and 24-6 in Game 4. A Suggs kill ignited a 7-point service run for Long. Long capped the run with an ace, before Whiteville took the next point.
East Bladen, now 2-3, will travel to West Columbus Tuesday.
