Bladen County Emergency Services has begun voluntary evacuations of people on Burney Road and River Road between White Oak and Tar Heel.

Emergency Services Director Bradley Kinlaw says officials are going door-to-door encouraging officials to evacuate the area before roads become impassible because of flooding of the Cape Fear River.

The National Weather Service reports 12 to 18 inches of rain from Hurricane Matthew is causing excessive runoff and rapid rises in main and secondary rivers. Some roads that were clear Monday morning, may quickly flood as rivers continue to rise.

Voluntary evacuations remain in place for areas along South River and Black River, Kinlaw says.

East Bladen High School, on N.C. 87, is serving as a shelter for people in need of a place to stay in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. It is a pet-friendly shelter.
