Firefighters are essential to local areas. They perform many different duties, from putting out infernos, responding to traffic accidents, to taking cats out of trees. Although those don’t typically happen every day, the work of firefighters must never go unappreciated, even in the smallest of circumstances. Volunteer Firefighters do a lot more than wait around until a fire starts they are a vital part of fire safety and first responders in our communities.

Career Firefighters and Volunteer Firefighters must help around the fire stations with tasks ranging from cleaning equipment and vehicles to helping out in emergencies or community events. Along with this, Volunteer Firefighters usually are one of the few local options for areas without a fire station or paid Firefighters. There are 887 Volunteer Firefighter companies across North Carolina alone.

“The work that they do for the fire service is always a very big help,” from Anthony Norris, Deputy Fire Chief Elizabethtown Fire Department, in a statement relating to the volunteers he works with. According to Firefighternow.com, there are several more benefits to becoming a volunteer firefighter. You get to build your resume, serve a local community, and there may be an opportunity for a future career as an paid firefighter, and the ability to have financial aid. You could also be eligible for a scholarship from the Blue Cross Blue Shield up to $1000.

Deputy Fire Chief Norris explained Volunteer Firefighters are essential to a community and should be commended for giving their time and energy to help others. Many Volunteer Firefighters work full time jobs and sacrifice a lot to be a Volunteer Firefighter. There are not enough Volunteer Firefighters in many areas. Anyone interested in becoming a Volunteer Firefighter may contact Norris or stop by their local fire department to find out more information.
