The United Way Day of Caring is set for Friday, Nov. 3, and volunteers are gearing up in preparation for the big day.

“As we prepare for this great day for our County, we are excited to share that volunteers have been busy helping us prepare for the event,” said United Way of Bladen County’s Barbara Knight.

On October 2nd, Knight said 18 employees of Specialty Product Technologies in Elizabethtown, led by team leader Darrell Marshall, gathered at the United Way office and prepared approximately 500 gift bags for the residents in Bladen County nursing homes.  Also, the Division Of Aging and Bladen Baptist Association have been partnering with Carolina Cross Roads and the Baptist Men teams at Dublin First Baptist and Clarkton First Baptist in building wheelchair ramps to specifications that will be transported to work stations on the Day of Caring.

“We are still in need of volunteers to build three additional ramps and we need volunteers to help with transporting and setting up the ramps on the Day of Caring,” said Knight.

She added people can continue to drop off canned food for backpacks for students to the Elizabethtown Fire Department for the Day of Caring event now through Nov. 3. Items needed for the backpacks include pop-top canned foods, instant grits or oatmeal, Pop Tarts, juice boxes, breakfast bars, etc.

Items needed for gift bags for senior adults include writing pads, pens, combs, and hygiene items.

Knight said some of the projects planned for Day of Caring include the installation of at least 10 wheel chair ramps, delivering gift bags to 500 residents in four Bladen County nursing homes, visiting and leading games at the nursing homes and packing weekend backpacks with food for Bladen County students.

Those who contribute $100 or more will be recognized on a banner displayed at the Cape Fear Farmer’s Market on Nov. 3.

Volunteers are encouraged to arrive at the Cape Fear Farmers Market in Elizabethtown by 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 3.
