Abby WaltersMILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Abbey Walters hit a two-run home run in the first inning Friday night in helping UNC Pembroke to a 5-0 win over Georgia College in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference softball tournament.

Walters, who is from Bladenboro, also scored three runs and was walked twice in four plate appearances.

The Braves, now 29-23-1, will play top-seeded North Georgia on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the tournament semifinals. The championship game is scheduled Saturday at 4 p.m.

In UNCP’s first inning, after an out, Whitney Jackson doubled to left field. Walters followed with her eighth home run of the season. Toni Nelson also homered as the Braves opened a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Walters reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to second on another fielder’s choice, advanced to third on Nelson’s single to right, and scored when Savannah Melvin reached on a fielder’s choice.

In the seventh, Walters drew a one-out walk, went to second on Taylor Gerhart’s single, advanced to third on Nelson’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher on a pickoff attempt.

Walters, who played at West Bladen High School and Southeastern Community College, was selected to the Peach Belt All-Conference team announced Thursday. She leads UNCP with a .401 batting average and has 42 runs batted in.
