The current forecast for temperatures at midnight Sunday night are very cold. These temperatures, primarily in the mid 20s, will be accompanied by increasing NE winds, and wind chills at midnight are forecast to be about 15-20 degrees. Temperatures will continue to drop, falling into the upper teens across NC, low 20s in SC, by daybreak Monday with wind chill values as low as 5-10 degrees.
While we are focusing on New Year’s Eve since many people are likely to be outside, this will mark just the beginning of what will be an extended arctic outbreak. Temperatures through at least next weekend will remain well below normal, and it is not a stretch to say the current forecast produces one of the coldest 5-7 day stretches we have ever experienced.
