Week In ReviewThere was tragic news during the week. A Bladenboro man was arrested on a murder charge in death of his father’s fiancee. Marquail Allen Burney, 20, was charged with murder after an incident Tuesday, Oct. 13 that left Crystal Dionne Cruz dead. She was found in a vehicle in the backyard of her residence on N.C. 41 West that she shared with her fiancee, David Burney, who is Marquail’s father, said Bladen County Sheriff James McVicker. Burney was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 14 in Lumberton.

In other news,

** The Bladen County Board of Elections released sample ballots for municipal elections scheduled Nov. 3, and reminded voters of one-stop voting hours scheduled to begin Thursday, Oct. 22. The board also sent a request to the State Board of Elections to merge the two voting precincts in both Bladenboro and Elizabethtown into one precinct in each town.

** John O’Daniel became Bladenboro’s town administrator Oct. 12. The 25-year-old High Point area native was hired by unanimous vote by the town’s board at its regularly scheduled monthly meeting. O’Daniel replaces Melanie Hester, who had served as administrator since March 2014 and has returned to her clerk’s position.

** Haven Cashwell was crowned Miss Bladenboro on Oct. 17 and was joined in her court by Princess Anna Grace Allen, Baby Miss Addlyn Thompson, Wee Miss Maelee Norris, Tiny Miss Macyee Kinlaw, Petite Miss Anna Claire Walters, and Junior Miss Kallie Bass.

** Haley Dimery was crowned West Bladen High School’s homecoming queen. Stefan McDonald was the homecoming king.

** In high school football, East Bladen defeated Heidi Trask 35-7 and West Bladen topped Pender 50-21.

** West Bladen juniors Alanna Ludlum and Amber Long won the Four County Conference 2-A Doubles Tennis Championship on Oct. 14, defeating Clinton’s Nicole Spell and Blake Daniel in the title match.

** Elizabethtown should have a skatepark at Leinwand Park by the end of the month, Town Manager Eddie Madden announced. With help from Fayetteville-based Friends of the Skateparks Foundation and funding from a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant, plans call for a half-pipe skatepark to be ready for use in less than three weeks.
