Week In ReviewTons of fun in Dublin, a school consolidation plan, and nine people from Bladen County sentenced to prison for their involvement in an international cocaine trafficking organization. Those were the top stories the past week.

The week ended with a parade, food, rides, music and much more as part of the 23rd annual Dublin Peanut Festival on Sept. 19. Hundreds of folks lined N.C. 87 in the morning to watch the parade, then people packed the grounds at Dublin Primary School for the activities, which also included a classic car show. It’s an annual event that truly has something for everyone.

On Sept. 14, the Bladen County Board of Education voted to proceed with a consolidation plan that would close Clarkton School of Discovery, Booker T. Washington Primary in Clarkton and Plain View Primary near Tar Heel at the end of the school year. The school system is planning to have community forums before a final decision is made. The vote to proceed with Supt. Robert Taylor’s proposal was 5-4, with board chair Ophelia Munn-Goins breaking the tie. Theresa Wuebbles, who was one of the founding members of Clarkton School of Discovery, spoke with Bladen Online in an exclusive video interview about the importance of keeping the school open.

A major international cocaine trafficking operation in Bladen County? That’s the word from U.S. District Attorney Thomas Walker, who announced Sept. 18 that nine people from Bladen County were among 16 sentenced for their involvement in the organization. The organization was importing the cocaine from Jamaica for distribution in the region, Walker said.
