GREEN SEA, S.C. – West Bladen opened its high school football season with a pair of scrimmages Tuesday night at Green Sea-Floyds High School.

In the first scrimmage, the Knights scored twice while holding Dixon out of the end zone in pair of 10-play possessions. West Bladen’s first touchdown came on a 1 yard run from Malique McDowell that was set up by a pass of about 20 yards from quarterback Stefan McDonald to receiver Jonathan Ashworth. The Knights’ second score came on a 1 yard run from McDowell on the ninth play of the season.

In the second scrimmage, West Bladen and Mullins, S.C., each scored on their first possession and were stopped on their second possession. The Knights’ touchdown was scored on run by Daquan Lennon.

“We started off kind of slow, had a lot of cobwebs, got a lot of new folks playing some positions, but I was pretty pleased,” West Bladen coach Russell Dove said. “I thought the longer we went, the better we got on offense. Defense, the same thing. The longer we went the better we got. I was pleased with the speed of the game on defense. Offense, we’ve got to get a little bit faster. We had some misplays, but that’s to be expected. That will come. Overall, I’m pretty pleased with where we’re at, but we’re nowhere close to where we need to be.”

One area of concern for the Knights heading into the season is the offensive line, which has only Donald McCullum returning. But Dove liked what he saw Tuesday.

“I was decently surprised,” he said. “We haven’t worked against a 50 front a whole lot and that was the first thing we saw, and I thought they handled it pretty decently. It shows me they’re learning their reads and I think right now it’s just the pace of the game, going from playing at that JV level to playing at the varsity level. That’s just fundamental drills every day. We’ll get better at that.”

West Columbus, South Columbus and Green Sea-Floyds also participated in Tuesday’s scrimmage.

West Bladen is scheduled to travel to Red Springs on Wednesday for another round of scrimmages. The Knights are scheduled to play at 4 p.m.
