West Bladen grad John Bowen has announced that he is transferring from Belmont Abbey College to UNC-Wilmington to continue his college basketball career.

“I am coming home,” tweeted Bowen Thursday night referring to the close proximity of Wilmington to his Bladenboro home. Bowen will have two years of eligibility remaining when he joins the Seahawks.

Bowen started 22 games and played in 28 games for the Crusaders this past season. The 6-8 sophmore shot 54.4% from the field and averaged 9 points and 5.5 rebounds while playing 23 minutes per game.

The move is a step up from Division II Belmont Abbey to the Division I UNC-W Seahawks. Another factor besides the proximity to Bowen’s hometown is that his coach at Belmont Abbey, Billy Taylor, has resigned to take an assistant coach position at the University of Iowa.

During his senior season at West Bladen Bowen scored 16.4 points per game and was named All-Four County Conference.
