A 17-0 second-half spurt carried West Columbus to a 40-22 non-conference girls basketball victory at West Bladen Friday night.

The Lady Vikings led 12-10 at halftime, but junior Laikyn Pait popped in a baseline 12-footer then buried a 3-point shot to vault the Lady Knights in front 15-12.

West Columbus’ Raeana Goodman hit a free throw, and teammate Jennifer Williams put back a rebound to tie the game 15-15.

Pait flipped in a one-hand runner to give the Lady Knights their final lead at 17-15 with 4:12 left in the third quarter.

Goodman bombed in a 3-pointer, and Annela Tiffany canned 2 free throws and a 15-foot jumper. Maur’laesha Holland drained a 3-point shot as West Columbus took a 26-17 lead at the quarter break. Two more baskets by Tiffany pushed the lead to 30-17.

Freshman Erika McKoy nailed a 3-point shot from the right corner to snap the Lady Viking run, and junior Alanna Ludlum banked in a 4-footer off of an assist from sophmore Elizabeth Allbright that brought West Bladen to within 32-22 with 3:16 left to play.

The Lady Vikings scored the final 8 points of the game. Tiffany led West Columbus with 12 points, and Goodman and Jay’brehon Shanks followed with 8 points each.

Pait topped the Lady Knight scoring with 7 points. Allbright and McKoy finished with 5 points each. Junior Jerena Purdie pulled down 4 rebounds for West Bladen. Pait, Allbright and Ludlum followed with 3 rebounds each.

West Columbus grabbed an early 7-0 lead, before Allbright broke the scoring ice for West Bladen with a 12-foot jumper. Allbright connected again on a baseline jumper then tacked on the free throw to complete the 3-point play and pull the Lady Knights within 7-5.

The Lady Vikings led 9-5 at the quarter break and extended the lead to 11-5. McKoy pumped in a 15-footer, and sophmore Patience Parker fired in a 3-pointer to pull West Bladen within 12-10 at halftime.

West Columbus outrebounded West Bladen 42-25 and held a huge advantage at the foulline. The Lady Vikings connected on 12 of 31 free throw attempts, while the Lady Knights made 1 of only 3 foul shots.

West Bladen, now 2-4, will play Monday at 5 p.m. in the East Bladen Holiday Classic against North Brunswick.
