Dr. Roxie Wells, Associate Chief Medical Officer with Cape Fear Valley Health, updated the White Lake Board of Commissioners at their Tuesday evening regular meeting. Dr. Wells stressed the importance for rural communities to have access to care. The hospital is looking forward to the new clinic scheduled to be constructed in White Lake. “I am committed to this community and to quality healthcare for the community,” stated Dr. Wells. Mayor Goldston Womble thanked her for coming and stated the Town is looking forward to working with the hospital.

Womble administered the Oath of Office for re-elected commissioners Tim Blount, Paul Evans and Mike Suggs. Tom Riel was sworn in as the Mayor Pro Tempore.

In administrative matters, the Board approved the 2016-17 Audit Report; approved Utility and Tax releases; and apporved First Bank’s financing proposal for the Police Department Vehicle ($26,000 at 2.43%).

Womble gave an update on Lake Water Quality. He has met with a group twice regarding the rise in PH levels and the growth of algae in the lake. They have found that a large number of lakes along the East Coast are experiencing the same problems.

The group’s overall plan is three-fold: 1. What can be done to restore the water clarity on a short-term basis? 2. What is causing the growth of algae in the lake? 3. What is the long-term solution to bringing the lake back to its original pristene condition?

Womble said that a proposal will be brought to the Commissioners at the January meeting from a group using Nano Bubble Technology, a non-chemical process, which draws the water out, infuses it with oxygenated bubbles and returns the water to the lake, and killing the algae in the process. More information will be shared once the proposal is received. Womble was hopeful that the particular algae has been identified and that the process may be a short-term solution to the immediate problem.

White Lake Town offices will be closed Dec. 25-27 and Jan. 1 for the holidays. An on-call person will be available in case of water/sewer emergencies.
