In lieu of gathering for their scheduled Budget Retreat, the White Lake Board of Commissioners met Tuesday evening by telephone conference call. As Mayor Goldston Womble said, “It is not an ideal way to conduct business, but certainly necessary.” He indicated that Town staff is working on utilizing Zoom web-based meeting software for the April meeting.

The Board approved contracts for updated lighting in Turtle Cove and at the Municipal Building parking lot with Duke Energy.

An ordinance amendment was also approved stating that due to COVID-19, the associated and escalating public health and safety crisis and the recommendations of the North Carolina Utilities Commission, Womble authorized staff to not disconnect delinquent utility accounts.

During the budget retreat portion of the meeting, commissioners gave feedback on possible service fees to off-set services or ongoing expenses provided through Leaf & Limb Service and the Lake Water Management Project. There was also discussion regarding the cost of providing postal boxes with a box rate increase to occur in FY20-21. Commissioners suggested no cost of living increase for town employees as sales tax revenues may be reduced due to Covid-19. Staff will continue working on the FY20-21 budget to present to the Board.

The next commissioners meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14 at 7 p.m.
