In a monthly report shared with the White Lake Town Council on Tuesday, Lake Stewardship Officer Steve Bunn informed the board that recent rains have raised the lake level some to 64.85 ft above sea level as of May 6. Ground water levels have dropped due to vegetation growth. Evaporation rates will increase as the weather and the water heat up. If the evaporation rates exceed rainfall rates the lake will drop below it’s current level as it does every summer. Bunn also reported that a mass mailing of a stewardship pledge letter has had approximately 75 responses at this time.

In other administrative matters, Council approved April Utility Releases ($410.51), Tax Releases ($66.68), and Tax Refunds ($117.53); adopted the Capital Project Ordinance Amendment for Sanitary Sewer Improvements: approved the service agreement for LRCOG and the Town for Zoning Ordinance updates; approved a DOT wastewater connection agreement; and authorized destruction of records in accordance with Retention/Disposition schedule.

The Lumber River Council of Governments applied for a Wastewater Asset Inventory and Assessment Grant on the Town’s behalf through the NC Department of Environmental Quality. Kim Colson, P.E. Director of the Division of Water Infrastructure, NCDEQ, advised the Town has been approved for the $150,000 grant. Council adopted a resolution to authorize Mayor Goldston Womble to execute the offer and acceptance of the grant.

The municipal complex will be closed Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day. A public works employee will be on call to respond to any water/sewer emergencies.

Tuesday’s meeting was adjourned until Tuesday, May 19 at 6 p.m. for a budget committee meeting.
