The Winter Solstice, which begins on Tuesday, Dec. 22, marks the shortest day and longest night of the year.

According to Wikipedia,  this day actually marks the date the earth’s axis is tilted the farthest away from the sun. According to the website, timeanddate.com, the exact time for the winter solstice for our area is roughly Monday, Dec. 21, at 11:49 p.m.

According to Wikipedia, the winter solstice coincides with some festivals and celebrations such as Yule.

The solstice actually occurs twice–once in the Northern Hemisphere and again six months later in the Southern Hemisphere.

In ancient times, ancient cultures would follow the astrological movements of the sun and moon and would use those movements to determine the time to plant, the time to harvest, and the time to mate livestock and such, according to Wikipedia.
