SoccerHannah DeVane’s assist set up Alexa Hernandez who fired in the game-winning goal that gave East Bladen’s Lady Eagles a 1-0 non-conference season-opening victory over visiting East Columbus.

The game-winner came in the 65th minute. “Hannah crossed the ball across the goal mouth and found Alexa on the backlist for the easy tap in,” said East Bladen Coach Jay Raynor.

“We were happy to get the win and the shutout,” added Coach Raynor. “The last few weeks playing good defense all over the field  is what our goal has been about. Tonight I thought we did that.”

Kathryn Cole had one save in goal for East Bladen. The Lady Eagles outshot East Columbus 15-2 and played the majority of the game on the Lady Gator end.

“From our first line of defense all the way to our backline, we played and fought hard,” said Raynor. “We haven’t worked much on our attack just defending.”

“The game plan was to go in and not give up easy shots or goals,” stated Coach Raynor. “I feel good knowing we accomplished both of those tonight. We had some good looks offensively that didn’t go in but they will come. Extremely proud of the girls defensive effort.”

“Lexi Mendell, Anna Grace Long, and Ayaona Avery really controlled the midfield for us,” said Coach Raynor. “It seemed like Lexi was making play after play and keeping our attack alive.”

Raynor continued, “Claire Campbell showed great leadership with keeping her backline in-shape and not allowing EC to have looks at goal.”

The Lady Eagles travel to St. Pauls tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6 p.m.
