WoodHaven Nursing, Alzheimer’s and Rehabilitation Center, an affiliate of Southeastern Health, was recently awarded a $23,000 North Carolina Culture Change Enhancement Grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The funding will be used by WoodHaven’s Activity Department and Rehabilitation Center to purchase an It’s Never Too Late (iN2L) educational interface system.
“This system will allow our residents to have greater access to spiritual, intellectual, entertaining and personalized content that aids in hand/eye coordination, mental stimulation and family interaction,” said WoodHaven Director Barbara Collins. “The person-centered program that engages and empowers older adults will help our residents feel a stronger connection to the world and to their families through this system’s touch screen capability.”
The picture-based interface and senior-friendly applications will facilitate resident access to continually updated content for brain fitness, education, virtual travel, spirituality, music, games, trivia, exercise and more. The system will provide greater access to spiritual development materials, including devotionals, sermons and faith-based music and videos. Residents will have greater social interaction through safe and easy to use email, web cam and social networking resources. Brain exercises, educational and travel videos, interactive games, trivia, history and news topics will provide cognitive development and stimulation. The iN2L system can support the physical needs of our residents by providing exercise and therapeutic activities, as well as the bike and flight simulators.
“While we currently provide internet and Wi-Fi access to residents, we aspire to create a more innovative environment that will help our residents enhance their independence and maintain connection to the outside world,” said WoodHaven Activities Director Kim Bazemore. “The intuitive design of the iN2L system will allow residents, regardless of technological experience, physical limitation or cognitive ability, to use the computer with minimal frustration.”
WoodHaven is a 115-bed nursing home which includes a 15-bed unit dedicated exclusively to the care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders which recently added a short-term rehab wing. For more information, call 910-671-5703.
