Human beings tend to categorize different matters concerning their general characteristics, such as shape, color, or size. One way to describe something relatively small is by using the word “diminutive.”
The term diminutive refers to things that are significantly and unusually small. The origin of this word lies in the Latin expressions diminutus and deminut. These words referred to strangely little things. The word’s meaning was translated from Latin to French and later to the English language. Today, the word retains its meaning of describing microscopic objects.
Within its lexical components, di and minutus stand out. The prefix di means divergence or separation. On the other hand, the suffix minutus stands for “something that is reduced.”
According to its grammatical structure, the word diminutive is considered an adjective or qualifier, used to give characteristics to either a person, animal, or object. The term “diminutive” consists of four syllables (di-min-u-tive), and its correct pronunciation is dih-min-yuh-tiv. Here are some examples of the use of the word:
- My friend’s earrings are diminutive; I don’t think we can find them in this big room.
- My nephew is three years old; He is diminutive compared to my cousin.
- I can’t believe how diminutive the planet Earth is next to Jupiter.
- If I wanted to make a creative sculpture, it would be the most diminutive size possible.
- My friend wanted to learn how to cross stitch but gave up because of the difficulty threading the diminutive needle holes.

Los seres humanos tendemos a clasificar los diferentes materias en función de sus características generales, como la forma, el color o el tamaño. Una forma de describir cosas bastante pequeñas es usando la palabra “diminuto.”
El término diminuto se refiere a cosas que son significativa e inusualmente pequeñas. El origen de esta palabra se encuentra en las expresiones latinas diminutus y deminut. Estas palabras se referían a cosas extrañamente pequeñas. Dentro de sus componentes léxicos destacan di y minutus. El prefijo di significa divergencia o separación.
Por otro lado, el sufijo minutus significa “algo que se reduce.” El significado de la palabra fue traducido del latín al francés y más tarde al idioma inglés. Hoy en día, la palabra diminuto conserva su significado de describir objetos microscópicos.
De acuerdo a su estructura gramatical, la palabra diminutivo se considera un adjetivo o calificativo, usado para dar características a una persona, animal u objeto. La palabra “diminutivo” consta de cuatro sílabas en total (di-min-u-tive), y su pronunciación correcta es dih-min-yuh-tiv. Veamos algunos ejemplos del uso de la palabra:
- Los pendientes de mi amiga son diminutos; No creo que podamos encontrarlos en esta gran sala.
