Schizoid is a personality disorder, which suggests social avoidance behavior.
The origin of the term schizoid lies in the words schizo and eidos. The expression schizo relates to mental disturbances, such as hallucinations, conflicting thoughts, and identity issues. On the other hand, the Greek phrase eidos stands for “form, way to be or express.” The accurate pronunciation of the word is skit·soyd.
Schizoid condition suggests apathetic and antisocial behavior. That is, people who suffer from this disorder tend to keep little, if not null, social life. Schizoid disorder generates in people emotional aloofness and solitary practices. They are also limited to expressing their feelings and have difficulties establishing relationships (even with family members). Schizoid individuals usually lack empathy due to their unawareness of human relations’ importance. They are typically characterized as “lonely, weird, or eccentric.” Within the common perception, people who suffer from this condition carry out violent behaviors. According to the Bright Quest Treatment Center, “There is no direct link between a diagnosis and violent behavior, though co-occurring disorders could increase the risk of self-harm.”
In many cases, people with this disease are unable to perform regular activities, such as getting a job or establishing a romantic relationship. This condition is usually developed in early adulthood. Regardless, the probability of presenting this disorder is rare. A schizoid personality disorder is a chronic condition and has no cure. According to Mayo Clinic, some treatment options include:
- Talk therapy (psychotherapy).
- Group therapy.
- Medications.
