NC DOTThe N.C Department of Transportation said Monday that work is expected to continue until at least the end of September on a pair of 86-year-old bridges on N.C. 211 near Clarkton.

The work on the Brown Marsh Swamp and Elkton Swamp Creek bridges, both built in 1929, began in late July. When crews began work on the bridges, it was determined that needed girder repairs may extend the duration of the project. Bridge girders are steel beams used to support bridge decks where motorists drive. While continuing work to other areas of the project, engineers are studying the repair options and impacts. The project is tentatively scheduled to wrap up by the end of September.

There is a signed detour associated with the project and motorists will notice traffic shifts as needed and can expect travel delays, NCDOT says.
