Wyatt Long of Raleigh – a young fisherman with Bladen County roots – and his fishing teammate, Hunter McKee, finished fifth in the Cabela’s Lake Hartwell Early Bird Challenge.

By finishing fifth Long (wearing the white shirt) and McKee qualified for the 2017 High School Championship Tournament to be held on Pickwick Lake at the intersection of the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee in June.

Long and McKee totaled 12.04 pounds of bass in the Lake Hartwell and finished just one pound out second place.

Long is the son of Bladenboro natives Beth and David Long and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Long and Mr. Oren Young.

On February 25 Long and McKee placed second in the second event of the North Carolina Bassmaster High School Series (East Division) at Lake Gaston.

Long and McKee caught 5 bass that weighed a total of 16.55 lbs. at Lake Gaston. They also caught a 6.98 lb. bass that was the biggest fish of the day. Long and McKee caught their fish using crankbaits around areas of exposed vegetation.

After two events in Bassmaster Series, Long and McKee are in third place, but are only a single point out of second place.
