The Youth Ambassadors for A Better Community hosted their first ever Rural Food Justice Summit in Fort Caswell North Carolina from April 20th through April 22nd, 2018. There were approximately 70 people in attendance and other youth groups such as A Better Chance A Better Community, Youth Empowered Solutions, and NC Field were also present.

The event officially began on Friday evening with a few ice breakers and other engaging activities. Then on Saturday, the learning adventure began. Sessions on The Food Movement in North Carolina, Injustice in the Fields & the Farmworker Movement, Healthy School Food Policies, and Storytelling for Change, were inculcated by members from the Youth Ambassadors for A Better Communities officer team. Later that evening, everyone was able to be inspired by many of our talented peers that participated in open mic. Chance Snowden, the Media Director for the Youth Ambassadors, said that he “enjoyed the summit and that it was a “positive experience for the youth and the environment”. Similarly, Aazizah Bryant who serves as Parliamentarian for the Youth Ambassadors stated that the event “was eye-opening and inspiring”, she also went on to say that she learned so much and couldn’t wait to return home and share her newfound knowledge with friends and family.

Not only was the event enjoyable but it allowed youth of various religions, races, and backgrounds to come together and discuss issues that seem to negatively affect their communities. The Rural Food Justice Summit was an important first step and we can not wait to see what the future has in store for us.  We shared stories and views on positive world changes and how they could assist in making a difference.

The officers of the Youth Ambassadors for A Better Community who put the event together are very passionate about environmental justice, food justice, equality, and living sustainably. Thanks to a few of our sponsors such as Resourceful Communities, the Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project, INC, and the Columbus County Cooperative Extension office, our vision and dream for the summit became a reality. We always appreciate the support, donations and guidance that we receive.
