1876 – US Coast Guard officers’ training school established in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

1928 – In the first women’s Olympic track event, American sprinter Elizabeth Robinson equals her own world record of 12.2 seconds to win the 100 meter gold medal in Amsterdam. Canadians Fanny Rosenfeld and Ethel Smith finish in a dead heat for second place at 12.3 seconds.

1932 – The Cleveland Indians christen their new home, Municipal Stadium, before more than 76,000 fans, but lose to the Philadelphia Athletics 1-0.

1948 – President Harry Truman dedicates Idlewild Field (now Kennedy Airport) in New York.

1951 – Japan Airlines is established.

1961 – Israel welcomes its one millionth immigrant.

1964 – US Ranger 7 takes 4,316 pictures before crashing on the Moon.

1969 – National Guard mobilizes in racial disturbances in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

1970 – Chet Huntley retires from NBC, ends “Huntley-Brinkley Report.”

1971 – Apollo 15 astronauts take a 6½-hour electric car ride on the Moon.

1973 – Delta Airlines DC-9 crashes in fog at Logan Airport, Boston, killing all but one of 89 aboard. Lone survivor died 5 months later.

1978 – Cincinnati infielder Pete Rose singles off Phil Niekro to extend his hitting streak to 44 games as Reds edge Atlanta Braves 3-2. The hit tied Willie Keeler’s 81-year-old National League record.

1980 – Hurricane Allen forms in the Atlantic Ocean and goes on to become the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin with winds of 190 mph.

1987 – Rockwell International awarded contract to build a fifth space shuttle.

1991 – Russia and the United States sign a long range nuclear weapons reduction pact.

2002 – Polaroid Corporation is purchased by One Equity Partners, continuing to operate under the Polaroid Corporation name.

2007 – Boston Celtics obtain former Most Valuable Player and 10-time All-Star Kevin Garnett in a 7-for-1 deal with Minnesota Timberwolves, then the NBA’s biggest trade for one player.

2012 – Michael Phelps becomes the greatest medal winner in Olympic history as part of the winning American 4×200-meter freestyle relay team in London. It was Phelps’ 19th career Olympic medal and 15th overall gold.

2018 – Facebook discloses and removes Russian-linked network of sites attempting to interfere in American politics.

2019 – Federal Reserve cuts interest for the first time since 2008 by 0.25%.
