A computer virus is making its rounds and it has idled more than one business and government office. The virus, it is reported, seems to come from a legitimate source and asks the victim to open an invoice to pay for a service or an item.
Recently, the Bladen County government offices have fallen victim to the virus, according to an update given in the Healthy Bladen Collaborative meeting on Tuesday, September 26th.
The way the virus works is it uses what appears to be a legitimate email and email message regarding an invoice for a service or purchase of an item. If the victim clicks on the message and downloads the attachment, they are actually downloading a virus onto their machine.
Symantec.com advises users to never open attachments which are sent from users or email addresses they do not recognize and never open attachments ending in .exe. Symantec.com’s website advises, “Users should avoid downloading and running programs with file names that are the same or similar to those listed below:
Av.exe
Ave.exe
Contract.exe
Ecard.exe
Eticket.exe
Install.exe
Invoice.exe
Msa.exe
Msb.exe
Postcard.exe
Settings.exe
Video[1].exe”
According to Symantec, these are all known to contain viruses or other types of malicious software.
