The members of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club love serving in their communities. The Rotarians wanted to find a way to make Christmas better this year for families being served by Families First, Inc. Rotary Club Service Chairman Michael Leinwand and President Anne Beyer shopped for gifts, including two bicycles, which were presented to Families First’s Marjorie Lewis on Wednesday afternoon at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery.

Lewis visited with the Elizabethtown Rotary Club on Wednesday during their annual holiday social. Lewis addressed the Rotarians and shared her own story as a survivor of domestic violence.

“My mother and father told me not to marry him (her fiancé),” said Lewis. She recounted how she married him any way and things seemed fine at first but the violence soon began. Lewis told the Rotarians that while she was in a violent marriage, she did not know where to turn for help. Lewis recounted that she was finally able to leave her marriage and put the violence behind her.

Lewis told the Rotarians that it was through her personal experience that she became interested in volunteering with Families First, Inc. She explained Families First, Inc. operates a domestic violence shelter and they assist both men and women who are in violent relationships.

The Rotarians presented Lewis with the gifts they had purchased for Families First, Inc.

Also, Elizabethtown Rotary Club Foundation Chairman Dr. William Findt presented President Anne Beyer with the Paul Harris Fellow award. The Elizabethtown Rotary Club was presented with the Public Image Citation.

The club also welcomed their newest member Laurie Borst. President Anne Beyer presented Borst her Rotary pin.
