There will be no fireworks at White Lake this year according to Terri Dennison with the Elizabethtown-White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Therefore BladenOnline has a challenge to celebrate freedom for Bladen County during these difficult times.
On July 2nd we will be participating in a clean up day. We would like to challenge all Bladen County residents to clean up in an area you usually do not visit. It can be a park, a graveyard, a parking lot, but help show some pride in the mother county by cleaning it up. Take photos while on the job. Email the photos to BladenOnline.com@gmail.com. We will publish the photos showing efforts of citizens making Bladen County Beautiful.
This will be in celebration of the Continental Congress declaring its freedom from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, when it voted to approve a resolution submitted by delegate Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, declaring “That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States…”
According to Britannica.com, Fireworks have been part and parcel of U.S. Independence Day, the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, since its first celebration in July 1777. That celebration took place in the midst of the Revolutionary War, however, and explosions, artillery fire, and “bombs bursting in air” were not exactly a cause for joy and celebration at the time.
Therefore the second part of the challenge is to decorate Bladen County with lights. If we can not have fireworks we can have a festival of lights. Our true freedom in America comes from our Creator. Let us shine the light.
