Thoughts While Shaving

Remember when making moonshine was a serious problem in our area? When I was in high school, I spent some time in ‘detention hall’ being punished for chewing chewing gum? Juicy Fruit, Dentyne or Spearment … sometimes bubble gum … It was not unheard of to walk where you wanted to go or ‘thumb a ride’, and no one was concerned about someone with a weapon?

Now, think about where we are today? I see folks walking, temp in the upper 80s and 90s. I would be happy to give them a ride, if I was sure they were not ‘high’ on drugs or have a weapon? … maybe both.

In my younger days, folks were concerned that we had too many deputies or police. I can hear them now telling about having only 2 or 3 deputies to cover the entire county, and seldom were there more than 2 or 3 police in most any town … (“My taxes are ‘out of sight’, spending too much for policemen”) Different today … In the early 50s drugs were not an issue. Occasionally, would hear of someone ‘busting up a liquor still’ … would go to court and receive a ‘tongue lashing’, pay the cost of court, or have it remitted, go back to work

Not sure I want to return to earlier days, but what happened? Frankly, kinda wish we could trade drugs for a little home brew … Trade crime for a headache … Far out, heck, I know it can’t happen, but I am concerned about where we are today…

Can you imagine tossing a body into the Cape Fear river? Did you see the news yesterday?

Oh, well … Hope your weekend is good … And, remember church services tomorrow.

“Today everybody wants to talk about their rights and privileges. In the fifties and sixties, people talked about their obligations and responsibilities.”
