In an effort to provide individual academic workspaces for Bladen County students, the East Bladen High School Counseling Department organized a project to refurbish vintage wooden school desks. According to Heather Guyton Thompson, Assistant Principal East Bladen High School, the first completed desks were delivered on December 23, 2020. Parents received the desks in time for students to receive them as Christmas gifts.

The team consisted of Dr. Jason Wray, Principal of East Bladen High School; Ms. Lisa Levy, Bladenboro Town Commissioner-elect; Ms. Alexis Cox, School Counseling Intern; Mr. Anthony Thomas, community volunteer; and Mr. Thomas Gitchel, community volunteer.

The refurbished desk project was also supported with onsite volunteers and supplies from Lowes Hardware stores in Lumberton and Whiteville, NC. A special thanks to Ms. Ann Brown and the Bladen County Schools maintenance staff for their support in providing these vintage desks for this project.

The team is working on completing additional desks for distribution by the end of January 2021.
