RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Halloween Safety Tips

This Halloween, NCDOT is encouraging parents, drivers and trick-or-treaters to be safe.

Over half of all pedestrian injuries in North Carolina occur when it’s dark.

Parents and children celebrating the holiday should follow these tips:

  • Carry a flashlight, wear reflective clothing and stay in well-lit areas.
  • Walk on sidewalks, not in the street. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic and off the road when possible.
  • Make sure that all children under 12 are supervised by an adult or an older, responsible teenager.

Drivers should also travel slowly through neighborhoods and areas where people could be walking.

11 Million Pounds of Litter

NCDOT crews, contractors and volunteers have collected over 11 million pounds of roadside trash statewide since Jan. 1. This surpasses the previous record of 10.5 million pounds collected in 2019.

Keeping our state beautiful starts with you:

  • Secure all loads before driving.
  • Clear loose items from truck beds.
  • Hold on to trash until it can be thrown away properly.
