Saving time and space has always been a concern for humanity. Throughout time, people have found multiple ways to enhance this practice, from improving organization to developing portable equipment. As bizarre as it may sound, grammar has also employed this method to save time and space while writing and speaking. This technique is known as abbreviating.
The term abbreviation is a noun, which derivates from the Latin word abbreviare. The earliest meaning of this word meant “shortening” and “making brief.” Around the XV century, abbreviations were adopted in English as a way to shorten words and phrases.
Abbreviations have had a significant impact on grammatical language. Further, abbreviations have a substantial influence on our daily communication. In most cases, abbreviations avoid repetitions. Moreover, these expressions are frequently used to save time between dialogues. Nowadays, it is usual to use abbreviations as an “alternative language” to express ideas. Following are some abbreviations employed in modern English:
- For the word Doctor, the correct abbreviation will be Dr.
- For Mister, the abbreviation is Mr.
- When talking about time, the words are shortened to their first letters. Namely, for January, the abbreviation is Jan.; for Monday, the abbreviation is Mon.
Another common type of abbreviation is the acronym. An acronym is a type of abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word. For example, the term “NASA” stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Compiling the first letters of this phrase, “N” for national; “A” for Aeronautics; “S” for space; and “A” for administration, these four characters generate the abbreviation “NASA.” Like this example, many organizations worldwide have practically simplified their titles. In this way, it’s easier for people to recognize them and remember their names. Acronyms are one route to use abbreviations. Following are some more examples:
- TFW – That feeling when.
- ILY – I love you
- JK – Just kidding
- IFYP – I feel your pain
- LOL – Laughing out loud
- IDC – I don’t care
- POV – Point of View
- OMW – On my way
- GRATZ – Congratulations
- IDK – I don’t know
- NBD – No big deal
- J4F – Just for fun
- AFAIC – As far as I’m concerned
- YNK – You never know
- TBH – To be honest
Some people consider shortening vocabulary makes communication easier and faster. However, other people find disadvantages while using abbreviations. Specifically, abbreviations may be difficult for the receiver of a message. Not being familiar with this method might lead to undesired effects such as misunderstandings.
In actuality, abbreviations are very common, either in general or particular contexts. In many cases, abbreviations are derived from local sayings and have a cultural meaning. In other scenarios, abbreviations are known worldwide, which is the case for SOS (Save Our Souls or Save Our Ship).

Ahorrar tiempo y espacio siempre ha sido una preocupación para la humanidad. A lo largo del tiempo, las personas han encontrado múltiples formas de mejorar esta práctica, desde mejorar la organización hasta desarrollar equipos portátiles. Por extraño que parezca, la gramática también ha empleado este método para ahorrar tiempo y espacio al escribir y hablar. Esta técnica se conoce como abreviatura.
El término abreviatura es un sustantivo, que se deriva de la palabra latina abreviare. El significado más antiguo de esta palabra significaba “acortar” y “abreviar”. Alrededor del siglo XV, se adoptaron abreviaturas en inglés como una forma de acortar palabras y frases.
Las abreviaturas han tenido un impacto significativo en el lenguaje gramatical. Además, las abreviaturas tienen una influencia sustancial en nuestra comunicación diaria. En la mayoría de los casos, las abreviaturas evitan repeticiones. Además, estas expresiones se utilizan con frecuencia para ahorrar tiempo entre diálogos. Hoy en día, es habitual utilizar las abreviaturas como “lenguaje alternativo” para expresar ideas. A continuación se muestran algunas abreviaturas empleadas en inglés moderno:
- Para la palabra Doctor, la abreviatura correcta será Dr.
- Para Señor, la abreviatura es Sr.
- Cuando se habla de tiempo, las palabras se acortan a sus primeras letras. Es decir, para Diciembre, la abreviatura es Dic; para lunes, la abreviatura es Lun.
Otro tipo común de abreviatura es el acrónimo. Un acrónimo es un tipo de abreviatura formada a partir de las letras iniciales de otras palabras y pronunciada como palabra. Por ejemplo, el término “NASA” significa Administración Nacional de Aeronáutica y del Espacio. Compilando las primeras letras de esta frase, “N” para nacional; “A” para Aeronáutica; “S” para espacio; y “A” para administración, estos cuatro caracteres generan la abreviatura “NASA”. Como en este ejemplo, muchas organizaciones en todo el mundo prácticamente han simplificado sus títulos. De esta manera, es más fácil para las personas reconocerlos y recordar sus nombres. Los acrónimos son una vía para utilizar abreviaturas. A continuación se muestran algunos ejemplos más:
- Ovni. Objeto Volador No Identificado.
- OTAN (Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte)
- Láser. Del inglés Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
- Bit. Binary digit, un dígito binario.
- APA. American Psychology Association, la asociación americana de psicología.
- ONU. Organización de las Naciones Unidas.
Algunas personas consideran que acortar el vocabulario facilita y acelera la comunicación. Sin embargo, otras personas encuentran desventajas al usar abreviaturas. Específicamente, las abreviaturas pueden resultar difíciles para el receptor de un mensaje. No estar familiarizado con este método puede provocar efectos no deseados, como malentendidos.
En la actualidad, las abreviaturas son muy comunes, ya sea en contextos generales o particulares. En muchos casos, las abreviaturas se derivan de dichos locales y tienen un significado cultural. En otros escenarios, las abreviaturas son conocidas en todo el mundo, como es el caso de SOS, que en sus siglas en ingles significa Save Our Souls o Save Our Ship.
