Aim for a Cure has held archery events for five years to help raise awareness and funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Alex Daniel, his family, and Steven’s Stompers organized the first “Bladen County Aim for Cure with Steven’s Stompers 3D Archery Event” in 2017. This week, almost six years after the first event, the group announced, “It has been a long time in the making. We received confirmation North Carolina Aim For A Cure Inc is now recognized as a 501 (c)3 charitable organization!”

A promise made to Steven Davis, a beloved Bladen County citizen who had ALS before he passed away in November of 2020, has led to the organization’s continuation of the annual event. The Aim For a Cure website states, “…as promised, the event will go on as long as God will permit it.”

Alex Daniel says their mission is “To raise awareness and funds for ALS research, treatment, and patient advocacy through the sport of archery.”

There is hope in ALS research and treatment. In 2019, Dr. Richard Bedlack described an ALS Reversals program that offers hope to those affected. On average, patients diagnosed with ALS live about three years, according to Dr. Bedlack, but the ALS Reversal program claims there have been over 45 patients who have seen a reversal in the disease.

ALS Reversal’s website states, “We want to understand these ALS reversals and replicate them in other patients.”

The local charity announced that it is time to save the date for the next event on their social media pages. They state, “Join us as North Carolina Aim For A Cure and the Steven’s Stompers – ALS Awareness crew come together to raise awareness and support for The ALS Association North Carolina Chapter.”

The 5th Annual Bladen County Aim For A Cure With Steven’s Stompers will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022, starting at 9 am. The annual event is held at Allen Brothers Outdoors, located at 200 Allen Brothers Drive in Bladenboro, NC.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a horrible debilitating disease that slowly robs a patient (pALS) of their life. The average life span with an ALS diagnosis is three to five years. During that time, the muscles atrophy and waste away, but the mind is unaffected. The cause of ALS is still unknown, the medical expenses are astronomical, and there is no cure! Imagine being trapped in your own body, depending solely on others entirely, unable to even swat a gnat out of your eyes, or call out for assistance, all while being completely aware of everything. We desperately need a cure, and our pALS need help to get the proper equipment and care!
