A staff report

As National Police Week unfolds in May, communities across the United States come together to pay tribute to the courageous men and women of law enforcement who serve and protect with unwavering dedication. This annual observance, established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962 and proclaimed by President Kennedy, highlights the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers. It includes the observance of May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

In 2024, National Police Week takes on special significance with the return of in-person events, reflecting on the valor exhibited by those in uniform. Among the key events is the 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil, organized by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, set for May 13. This solemn occasion will honor fallen officers whose names have been recently added to the Memorial, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Additionally, local communities are hosting their own memorial services, such as the one organized by the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina. Scheduled for May 17, 2024, at 8:00 a.m., the Peace Officers Memorial Service will be held at 299 Smith Circle, Elizabethtown, NC, with a backup location at Foundation Church in case of inclement weather. This event, open to the public, emphasizes the spirit captured in the saying, “It’s not how these officers died that made them heroes…it’s how they lived.”

Five Ways to Show Appreciation for Law Enforcement During National Police Week

  1. Attend Memorial Services: Participate in local memorial services and national events like candlelight vigils. Your presence can show solidarity and respect for the sacrifices made by officers and their families.
  2. Wear Blue: Show your support by wearing blue on May 15, National Peace Officers Memorial Day. This simple act of solidarity can have a powerful impact, signaling respect and appreciation for law enforcement personnel.
  3. Thank an Officer: Take a moment to express gratitude to police officers you encounter. A simple “thank you” can go a long way in showing appreciation for their daily commitment to protecting the community.
  4. Support Law Enforcement Charities: Donate to charities that support law enforcement officers and their families. Organizations such as the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund provide valuable resources and honor the memory of fallen heroes.
  5. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn more about the challenges and risks law enforcement officers face daily. Share this knowledge with others, especially young people, to foster respect and understanding for the work police do to maintain safety and order.

As we engage in these activities and events, let’s reflect on the profound service rendered by law enforcement officers and ensure their stories of bravery and dedication continue to inspire future generations.
