1900 – “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” is first published by L. Frank Baum with illustrations by Wallace Denslow in Chicago.

1915 – Chicago Cubs’ George “Zip” Zabel relieves with 2 outs in first inning and ends up with a 4-3 19-inning win over the Brooklyn Dodgers in the longest relief appearance in the history of Major League Baseball.

1921 – President Warren D. Harding opens, via telephone, the first Valencia Orange Show in Anaheim, California.

1932 – Congress changes name “Porto Rico” to “Puerto Rico.”

1939 – First televised baseball game is broadcast on NBC with Princeton University defeating Columbia University 2-1.

1944 – Chinese and United States armed forces take Myitkyina Airport in Burma during World War II.

1954 – Supreme Court unanimously rules on Brown v Topeka Board of Education which reverses the 1896 “separate but equal” Plessy v Ferguson decision ruling racial segregation in public schools is illegal.

1959 – Sam Snead sets Professional Golf Association record for 36 holes by shooting 122.

1961 – Cuban leader Fidel Castro offers to exchange Bay of Pigs prisoners for 500 bulldozers.

1970 – Atlanta’s Hank Aaron becomes the ninth player in Major League Baseball history to get 3,000 hits.

1973 – Stevie Wonder releases the music single “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life,” which goes to #1 and wins a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

1981 – New York Islanders score five power play goals against the Philadelphia Flyers in a National Hockey League playoff game.

1986 – “Chicken Song” by Spitting Image hits #1 on the United Kingdom pop chart.

1993 – Intel’s new Pentium processor is unveiled.

1998 – New York Yankees pitcher David Wells tosses a perfect game in a 4-0 win against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium.

2001 – President George W. Bush calls for reduced regulations to encourage more oil, gas, and nuclear production.

2008 – Dale Jarrett’s final race, the All-Star race, before joining ESPN’s NASCAR coverage full-time.

2015 – Gun fight between rival biker gangs and police in Waco, Texas leaves nine people dead and 18 injured. 170 people later arrested for organized crime.

2023 – Montana is the first state to ban TikTok with Governor Greg Gianforte signing legislation to ban the Chinese-owned social media network to protect against alleged intelligence gathering.
