Elizabethtown, NC – The Bladen County Division on Aging held its 2024 Senior Prom and Volunteer Recognition Event on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 11 am to 2 pm at the Whimsical Florist and Gifts’ Event Center in Elizabethtown. The event, organized by Miranda Faircloth, Director of Aging, and Kayla Bordeaux, Senior Center Director, celebrated the dedicated volunteers who have made significant contributions to the Bladen County senior citizen community.

The celebration started with a warm welcome and an exciting announcement of door prize drawings. As the catered meal by Giorgio’s Restaurant was plated, special recognition was given to over 25 volunteers who have gone above and beyond in their service. Among the highlights was the presentation of the prestigious North Carolina Governor’s Volunteer Service Award to two outstanding local volunteers, an honor bestowed upon only 20 individuals statewide each year.

Miss Jean Cross, one of the honorees, was recognized for her tireless efforts in keeping the community informed through the monthly newsletter she creates and her unyielding positivity and dedication.

Although Miss Frances Kinlaw, the other honoree, could not attend as she was ensuring meals were delivered to senior citizens in Bladenboro, her commitment was warmly celebrated.

There were around 89 attendees at the event. Dr. Teresa “Terri” Duncan, Bladen County Health and Human Services Director, emphasized the importance of such gatherings for enhancing the social well-being of senior citizens. “The smiles and laughter in this room are contagious,” she remarked, highlighting the positive atmosphere.

The local group Bless Bladen, known for its commitment to improving the lives of Bladen County seniors, was also present. They announced an upcoming community event and invited new members to join their planning meeting starting at 6 pm on May 28 at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church.

Mary Greene of Blessed Bladen announced that next month the group will host a community Lunch and Learn event. Scheduled for June 13 at noon, the gathering will feature a presentation titled “Beginning Conversation” at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCareCenter. The event will take place at the N.C. Cooperative Extension located on Smith Circle in Elizabethtown.

Miranda Faircloth, Director of Aging, explained that this Senior Prom and Volunteer Recognition Event celebrated the joy of the senior prom and honored those who serve and uplift their community every day. The Division on Aging extends its heartfelt thanks to all volunteers and participants for making the event a memorable one and looks forward to continuing these cherished community traditions.
