1901 – British Open Men’s Golf, Muirfield: Scotsman James Braid wins first of five Open titles by 3 strokes over Harry Vardon of Jersey.

1913 – Rabbit Maranville is thrown out trying to steal home three times.

1918 – Battle of Belleau Wood is first United States victory in World War I.

1925 – Walter Chrysler founded automobile manufacturer Chrysler Corporation.

1931 – “There Ought To Be A Moonlight Saving Time” by Guy Lombardo hits #1.

1941 – First United States Navy vessel constructed as a mine layer (CM-5) launched from the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

1944 – World War II: All Major League Baseball games are cancelled in honor of the D-Day landings in northern France.

1958 – Ozzie Virgil is first black to play for baseball’s Detroit Tigers.

2015 – Convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat break out of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York.

2023 – The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf League agree to unify to create its own for-profit entity to be run by the PGA Tour and funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
