1902 – First Automat restaurant opens at 818 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.
1909 – Alice Huyler Ramsey, a 22-year-old housewife from Hackensack, New Jersey, becomes the first woman to drive across the United States, driving a Maxwell 30 3,800 miles from Manhattan to San Francisco in 59 days.
1914 – Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner is second player to get 3,000 hits.
1923 – Cash carrying company Brinks unveils first armored security vans.
1930 – Chicago Tribune reporter and closet racketeer Jake Lingle is shot at close range and killed at the Illinois Central train station allegedly over a $100,000 gambling debt owed to Al Capone. Mobster Leo Brothers was convicted of the murder.
1934 – First appearance of Donald Duck in a cartoon “The Wise Little Hen.”
1943 – President Franklin Roosevelt signs Current Tax Payment Act into law authorizing tax to be withheld from worker’s wages to go straight to government.
1946 – 66,945 fans help New York Yankees break the one million attendance mark.

1990 – Los Angeles Dodgers’ Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle with the 10th time he has hit home runs from both sides of the plate in a game.
1995 – Movie “Smoke” premieres, loosely based on the Dearborn Heights, Michigan murders committed by Gregory Green.
2003 – Stanley Cup Final, Meadowlands Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey: New Jersey Devils beat Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-0 for a 4-3 series win.
