1870 – The last confederate state, Georgia, is readmitted to the United States.

1912 – American athlete Jim Thorpe is placed in top four in all 10 events for an Olympic record 8,413 points to win the decathlon gold medal at the Stockholm Olympics. He later was stripped of his medal for playing professional baseball, but the medal was reinstated in 1982.

1915 – A state record 22.22 inches of rain falls in Altapass, North Carolina.

1916 – Boeing Company is formed by William Boeing in Seattle, Washington.

1932 – President Herbert Hoover cuts his own salary 15%.

1939 – Clara Adams, beginning in New York, is the first woman to complete an around the world flight via commercial air travel.

1941 – Howard Florey and Norman Heatley present freeze dried mold cultures which led to the development of penicillin.

1949 – WBTV-TV channel 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina begins broadcasting.

1954 – First commercial jet transport plane, the Boeing 707, is built in the United States.

1973 – California Angels’ Nolan Ryan pitches his second no-hitter in beating the Detroit Tigers 6-0.

1978 – British Open Men’s Golf, St. Andrews: Jack Nicklaus completes third career grand slam, wins by 2 strokes over Ben Crenshaw and Ray Floyd.

1996 – MSNBC begins Microsoft internet-based NBC-TV.

2007 – Philadelphia Phillies lose to visiting St. Louis Cardinals 10-2 to become the first franchise in major American sports with 10,000 all-time losses.

2014 – Israel announces it has officially voted to accept the ceasefire proposed by Egypt. Hamas rejects, saying it was not consulted.

2019 – Tampa Bay catcher Travis d’Arnaud becomes first player in Major League Baseball history to hit three home runs while catching and batting leadoff in the Rays’ 5-4 win over the New York Yankees.

2023 – Singer Ed Sheeran welcomes surprise guest Eminem for two duets during his concert at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
