1849 – First women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls, New York, organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott.

1909 – Cleveland shortstop Neal Ball completes the first modern unassisted triple play in Major League Baseball in the Indians’ 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.

1922 – American swimmer Johnny Weissmuller is the first to break 1 minute barrier for 100-meter freestyle at 58.6 seconds in a meet at Alameda, California.

1930 – Richard E. Byrd, Laurence McKinley Gould, and their polar expedition team return to the United States following the first exploration of the interior of Antarctica.

1936 – 17-year-old Cleveland Indians future Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller makes his major league debut in relief in 9-5 loss to the Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium in Washington, DC.

1939 – Dr. Roy P. Scholz is the first surgeon to use fiberglass sutures.

1944 – More than 1,200 8th US Air Force bombers bomb targets in southwest Germany.
