1868 – First use of tax stamps on cigarettes.

1894 – 2,000 federal troops recalled from Chicago, having ended the Pullman railroad strike.

1911 – Boston Red Sox pitcher Smokey Joe Wood no-hits the St. Louis Browns in a 5-0 victory.

1917 – World War I draft lottery held: #258 is first drawn.

1921 – Congresswoman Alice Mary Robertson becomes the first woman to preside over the floor of the United States House of Representatives.

1930 – A district-record 106 degrees in Washington, D.C.

1940 – Billboard publishes its first singles record chart with “I’ll Never Smile Again” by Tommy Dorsey and with vocal by Frank Sinatra as #1.

1944 – Japanese aircraft carrier Hijo sunk by United States air attack.

1950 – “Arthur Murray Party” premieres on ABC-TV. It later is shown on DuMont, CBS and NBC.

1958 – Detroit Tigers future Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning no-hits the Boston Red Sox in a 3-0 victory.

1964 – Jan & Dean’s “Surf City” is the first surfin’ record to go #1.

1968 – Judy Garland headlines her last concert in the United States that also features Count Basie and Jackie Wilson at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1973 – The United States Senate passes the War Powers Act that requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action.

1976 – Hank Aaron hits his 755th and last home run off California Angels pitcher Dick Drago.

1988 – Michael Dukakis selected Democratic presidential nominee.

1994 – Former NFL running back, broadcaster and actor O.J. Simpson offers a $500,000 reward for evidence of ex-wife’s killer.

2000 – The leaders of Salt Lake City’s bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics are indicted by a federal grand jury for bribery, fraud and racketeering.

2008 – 16th Espy Awards: Tiger Woods, Candace Parker win.

2017 – Elon Musk tweets he has “verbal government approval” to build a 29 minute Hyperloop between New York and Washington, D.C. The project declared bankruptcy and ceased operations in 2023.

2020 – Announcement that a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford is able to trigger immune response and antibodies.

2022 – Russia now looking to extend its territory into southern as well as eastern Ukraine, according to a top Russian diplomat.
