There will be a Ruminant (Beef Cattle, Meat Goat, and Sheep) Nutrition and Forages series held at the Bladen County Extension Office located at 450 Smith Circle Drive in Elizabethtown this fall. The series will consist of 3 night classes. The classes for beef producers are Thursdays, November 5, 12 and 19 from 6:30-8:30 pm.  The classes for goat and sheep producers are Tuesday, November 10, Thursdays November 12 and 19 from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Topics include ruminant digestive system;

  • basic nutrients and specific nutrient requirements of beef cattle, meat goats and sheep; minerals;
  • supplementation using byproducts and other rations;
  • forages including winter annuals, summer annuals and perennials;
  • forage fertility and using animal waste as a fertilizer source;
  • disorders related to nutrition/forages;
  • grazing and hay feeding and management.

The cost is $25 for all the classes and includes a folder for you to take home.  There will be doorprizes and snacks provided.

The cost for additional members from the same farm is $10/ person (each farm gets 1 folder). Bring your check to the first meeting.
