The Smithfield Packing plant in Tar Heel was shut down Monday morning when a problem with an area of a roof caused a potential danger for employees, the company said.

“Our main concern is for the safety of our employees, and all employees have been sent home,” said Kathleen Kirkham, who is director of Corporate Communications fot the Smithfield, Virginia-based company. “The company plans to mitigate the impact of production losses by adding shifts at other plants.”

According to Bladen County EMS, there were no reports of a chemical leak Monday morning.

The Tar Heel plant was evacuated Oct. 12 because of an ammonia leak. The plant was shut down for several hours in order to allow the building to be ventilated properly.
