New Charter School coming to Bladen County?
New Charter School coming to Bladen County?

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s website an application has been submitted for a new charter school in Bladen County. According to the site, twenty-eight applications were submitted to open public charter schools in August 2017.

“Charter schools provide parents with an additional public school choice so that they can determine the best fit to support their child’s learning.” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson on the DPI’s website.

The information found listed the proposed charter school for our area would be named, Emereau: Bladen with sister schools in Wake, Nash, Johnston, and Halifax Counties. The projection for the first year would be to offer K through 6th grade in Bladen County with a projected enrollment of 308 students. The information lists the new charter school’s goal if approved would be to offer up to 10th grade with 830 students enrolled within the five year projection period.

The Charter Schools would not be part of our Bladen County School System. The contact listed for the Emereau Charter Schools is Ms. Anna Carolina Cole. At this time we have not been able to reach Cole for any comments.

According to Valerie Newton, Public Information Officer for Bladen County Schools, applications for a charter school are presented to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) where they spend about a year going through the application process before the NC DPI makes a recommendation for approval to the North Carolina State Board of Education.

With the public schools already struggling to stay open we wonder how this will affect our already crippled public education.
