NC-Highway-Patrol  Charges have been filed in a fatal crash that occurred earlier Friday on NC 11 near the Bladen-Columbus County line. The crash ocurred about noon on Friday.

“The truck was destroyed,” said NC Highway Patrol Trooper R. L. Walker.

According to Trooper Walker, a 2010 GMC Yukon operated by Charlie Boney of Maple Hill was traveling North on NC 11 towing a utility trailer. A logging truck operated by the victim was traveling south on NC 11.

Trooper Walker said the utility trailer became detached from the GMC Yukon and crossed the center line and was struck by the logging truck.

Walker said after striking the utility trailer, the logging truck struck the bridge railing and “road up on the guard rail” rupturing the fuel tank and overturning. Walker said the fuel caught fire and due to collision the logs came off the trailer and struck a 2004 Ford F650 truck owned by the Gregory Poole Company of Raleigh and operated by Joshua Crank of Jacksonville.

Crank suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Boney was charged with failing to secure the trailer and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to Trooper Walker.

The road was closed for several hours in both directions while crews worked to remove the logs, said Trooper Walker.

The name of the crash victim is being withheld at this time.
