NC DOTTransportation Secretary Nick Tennyson visited North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro and North Carolina State University in Raleigh to observe transportation-related classes, meet with students and faculty and discuss the transportation industry, job opportunities in state government and how Governor Pat McCrory’s administration is making college more affordable for students and their families.

The state budget signed by Governor McCrory guarantees students’ undergraduate tuition rate if they graduate within four or five years, depending on their field of study. The budget also caps fee increases at three percent annually.

Back-to-School Safety Reminder

Many elementary, middle and high schools throughout the state are kicking off a new school year, in addition to year-round schools that are already underway.

That means thousands of school buses will be returning to North Carolina’s roadways, and many other students will be traveling by car, biking and walking to and from school. Drivers should watch for students, use extra caution and obey all laws – including never passing a stopped school bus – in school zones and around school buses and bus stops.

Since 1999, 13 North Carolina children have been struck and killed while getting on or off a stopped school bus. There have been 2,552 convictions statewide for failure to stop for a stopped bus in the last five years, and in 2015 alone, there were 2,271 convictions for speeding in a school zone.
