The election of soon-to-be president Donald Trump may be the best example of the ‘silent majority’ speaking and voting I have witnessed in my years observing the process.
More election observations:
Think three Republicans on the Bladen County Board of Commissioners is a first for the county. For years Billy Ray Pait was the lone Republican. The new Republican members include David Gooden, Ray Britt and Ashely S. Trivette.
The new board, to be seated December 5, 2016, will consist of Gooden (a former member), Britt, Trivette, Ophelia Munn-Goins (currently a member of the Board of Education), G. Michael Cogdell, Daniel Dowless, Charles Ray Peterson, Russell Priest and Arthur Bullock.
Departing the board, Dr. Delilah Blanks, James G. (Jimmie) Smith, Billy Ray Pait (all longtime members), and Wayne Edge. Blanks and Pait did not seek re-election. Edge and Smith were defeated.
The first order of business for the newly constituted board, after being sworn in, is the election of chairman and vice chairman.
Haven’t heard ‘rigged’ since the election. Clinton apparently received a million or more votes than Trump, but fell short in electoral votes by a 238.5 to 299.5 margin.
Haulers/movers will be needed for the DC area soon, as current employees depart the scene and newly appointed arrive. Expect many new faces and personalities. Swearing-in ceremonies set for the later part of January, 2017.
Construction of the new Bladen County Detention Center is moving forward. Completion date, as I recall, is mid-to late 2017. It will house the jail and sheriff’s department at a cost of about $20 million.
Saw a photo of proposed temporary changes for traffic on US 701 at Brown’s Creek, near Elizabethtown Middle School. Could be several months before a permanent ‘fix’. Maybe a bottleneck, but better than present route. The bridge was swept away during the recent storm.
